In this quick tutorial, you will learn how to create a beautiful eye-catching vibrant text effect in Photoshop using plain layer styles and filters. We will play with some layer styles and filters to create our text in a very quick time, the steps are much easier to follow, this tutorial requires no user expertise, even a beginner can learn with ease and create some stunning text effects based on this.

Before going into the tutorial, let us see how the final image will look like.

Step 1:New Document

Create a new document of size 1280 by 1024 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of any simple, slab serif style font, i am using the font SD Eurostile Elite which can be downloaded from AcidFonts, about the size of 200 pt of some golden yellow or dark orange color (#FA8132). The color of the text does not matter that much since we are going to apply some layer styles over it and change the Fill Opacity to 25%.

Note: This text layer is the base for our design, so henceforth in the tutorial, we will be mentioning this layer as base_text.

Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Step 3: Layer Styles for the text

Bevel and Emboss

First apply the Bevel and Emboss style for the text, with the Gloss Contour option selected as Ring Double, you can find this option by clicking the drop-down next to it, please use the below image for your reference.

Satin

Next apply the Satin style.

Here also, we need to apply a different Contour style other than the default one. Choose the Ring contour style from the drop-down and apply OK.

This is the effect so far with our text.

Step 4: Cross hatch filter

With the text layer ready, next we need to apply some filters for the effect. For that we are going to duplicate our text layer along with the layer styles and then rasterize it and finally apply the blur.

So first select the original text layer, go to Layer -> Duplicate Layer (Ctrl + J), then create a new layer on top of it, select both the layers, then merge them by using Layer -> Merge Layers (Ctrl + E).

Then go to Filter -> Brush Strokes -> Crosshatch, use the settings as: Stroke Length = 50, Sharpness = 20 and Strength = 3, use the below image for your reference.

After apply the Crosshatch filter, our text will look like this.

Step 5: Motion Blur

Now make one more copy of the base_text layer and then rasterize it and apply some horizontal motion blur.

Go to Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur and give the values as Angle = 0 , Distance = 300 pixels and apply OK.

After applying Motion Blur.

Step 6: Making the text bolder

Now the text is overlapped by the blurs and crosshatch effects applied so far, we need to make the borders of the text stand out from these effects, for that make one more copy of the base_text layer, move it to the top, and apply the following layer style to it.

Gradient Overlay

Apply the Gradient Overlay style for text with the colors of the rainbow, there is a default gradient available called Transparent Rainbow choose this gradient, change the Blend Mode to Overlay and apply the style.

After applying the Gradient Overlay layer style, the effect will look like this.

Step 7: Making Fragments

We need to stylize the effect some more, for this we are going to apply the Fragment filter, duplicate the previous layer, the one with the gradient style applied and then rasterize it and go to Filter -> Pixelate -> Fragment and repeat this effect some 3-4 times.

After fragmenting the text will look like this.

Step 8: Adding more vibrancy

Our text effect is almost finished, but it is just lacking some vibrancy to it, for that create a new layer at the top, choose the Brush (B) tool, and select a soft round brush of about 200px diameter , 0% hardness and choose some bright colors like red, green and yellow and paint all over the text randomly with different colors.

Now change the blending mode of this layer to Overlay.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with a vibrant and gleaming text effect. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of filters, choice of fonts , layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

In this quick tutorial, you will learn how to create an awesomely shining golden text effect having a subtle glitter on its surface in Photoshop using plain layer styles and filters.

Create a new document of size 1600 by 1200 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of any simple, elegant style font, i am using the font Banda which can be downloaded from FontSquirrel, about the size of 400 pt of some golden yellow or dark orange color (#FA8132). The color of the text matters the most here since we are going to achieve some shiny golden material like effect for our text.

Note: This text layer is the base for our design, so henceforth in the tutorial, we will be mentioning this layer as base_text.

Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Step 3: :Layer Styles for the text

Bevel and Emboss

First apply the Bevel and Emboss style for the text, with the Gloss Contour option selected as Ring Double, you can find this option by clicking the drop-down next to it, please use the below image for your reference.

Satin

Next apply the Satin style.

Here also, we need to apply a different Contour style other than the default one. Choose the Ring contour style from the drop-down and apply OK.

This is the effect so far with our text.

Step 4: Motion Blur and Gaussian Blur

With the text layer ready, next we need to apply some horizontal motion blur for the effect.

Then go to Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur, use the settings as: Angle = 0, Distance = 998 pixels, use the below image for your reference.

After apply the Motion blur, our text will look like this.

Now we need to mask out certain portions of our text to give it a proper realistic motion blur like effect. For that add a layer mask to the layer and choose a soft round brush about 75-100 px diameter and 0% hardness and mask the text on the middle portions retaining the motion blur along the top and bottom edges, use the below image for your reference.

After masking the text, we will have nice effect like this.

Now duplicate this layer along with the mask , and move it to the bottom below the original text layer to add some strength to the blur.

We are adding one more blur effect for the text to create some nice glow around it, for that duplicate the original text layer and then rasterize it as before and then go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur, give Radius = 30 and apply OK.

After applying the Gaussian blur.

Step 5: Creating the glitter

Our text effect is almost done, but its looking very plain at the moment, so we need to light it up a little, for that we are creating a nice and shiny glitter material on its surface. For that we are going to duplicate our original text layer, then remove all the Layer styles, contract it to the size exactly matching the surface and then finally adding the glitter.

First duplicate the base_text layer, then move it to the top of the Layer Stack, remove all the Layer styles, by dragging the fx button to the Trash icon or you can right-click the layer and choose Clear Layer Styles. Then select the layer pixels by right-clicking on the layer and choose Select Pixels or alternatively you can click on the Layer Thumbnail while holding down the Ctrl (Cmd for Mac) key.

Once the Layer pixels got selected, we need to contract the selection exactly by the width of the beveled edge border previously applied to the effect through Layer styles. So we need to contract it by 5 pixels. Go to Select -> Modify -> Contract and then give 5 to the value and press OK.

Now our selection got reduced by 5 pixels.

All we need to do now is to apply the following layer styles of this layer.

Inner Shadow

Satin

Next we need to apply the Satin style with a different contour selected other than the default one and also changing the Blend Mode to difference.

Then finally apply some noise for the real glitter effect. Go to Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise and set the value Amount = 10% and press OK.

Change the Layer Blending Mode of this layer to Screen and set the Layer Opacity to 75%.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with a smooth and shiny text effect. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of filters, choice of fonts , layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

Download PSD

We’re finished! Hopefully you’ve picked up a few new techniques and had fun while doing so. Please share any of your personal creations in the comments for others to see!

In this comprehensive tutorial you will learn how to create a cool text effect which captures electricity really well. The combination of the old school neon light effect on the text and the waves of electric current and light make this a busy, but engaging piece. The wide variety of neon colors fit well with the concept, and light is effectively used to draw the eye.

Before going into the tutorial, let us see how the final image will look like.

Materials Needed:

Prisma font from DaFont

50 Deadly Tron Grids – Arcnerva Brushes from Brusheezy by Arcnerva

Any space nebulae stock image with stars

Step 1:New Document

Create a new document of size 1600 by 1200 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of the font Prisma which can be downloaded from DaFont, about the size of 500 pt of white color. The color of the text does not matter here since we are going to apply some layer styles on it.

Before applying the Layer styles you need to set the Fill Opacity to 0% for the text layer. Since we are going to apply two different layer styles for the text, make a duplicate of the text layer.

Note: This text layer is the base for our design, so henceforth in the tutorial, we will be mentioning this layer as base_text.

Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Step 3: Layer Styles for the text

Apply these following layer styles to the first – (bottom layer) text layer.

Gradient Overlay

First apply the Gradient Overlay style for the text, with the gradient colors running from a dark blue to yellow color with red in the middle, please use the below image for your reference.

The colors of the gradient from left to right respectively are, Blue (#0A00B2), Red (#FF0000) and Yellow (#FFFC00).

Inner Glow

Now apply an Inner Glow style with white color.

After applying the Layer sytles, our text will look like this.

Now for the second text layer (top layer), set the Fill Opacity of the layer to 0% and apply only the Inner Glow layer style as mentioned in the previous step.

Step 4: Creating the surging waves on the text

With our base text is ready, we are now going to create some surging waves in and around the text, for that we are going to use the duplicated text layer, the layer at the top which is having only the Inner Glow layer style with white color. This is done using the Ripple distortion filter available in Photoshop, go to Filter -> Distortion -> Ripple, apply the filter with the following settings such as Amount = 100%, Size = Large and apply OK.

We can now get a rippled wavy text with this filter.

This is the effect so far with our text.

Step 5: Creating the electric waves

With the text layers ready, next we need to create our waves for the effect. For that we are going to use the Rectangle (U) and draw a thin horizontal line below the text with the width of the line matching the width of the individual parts making up the text as such in the font and the length slightly greater than the text, so that the waves look like they are traveling in and around the text.

Apply the Inner Glow layer style for this rectangle as such provided for the rippled text layer, with slightly adjusting the size of the glow appropriately for the width of the rectangle , we have used the value Size = 8, you can adjust as you like.

After applying the Inner Glow style to the rectangle it will look like this.

Now our rectangle is ready to be distorted like a wave, so we are going to use the Wave distortion filter with the values used as the following. Go to Filter -> Distort -> Wave and apply the filter.

You can see now our basic light wave is ready.

Now create some more 4 to 5 waves like this with various bright and light colors to have some cool neon like effect for the waves.

We have created some waves in different colors like RGB Cyan, Magenta, Green and Yellow. Use the below image for your reference. You can also choose your own color palette with contrasting, light and bright colors according to your taste and preference.

After creating all the waves, group them all together by selecting all the wave layers and choose Layer -> Group Layers (Ctrl + G). Rename the group to something like waves for your identification.

Now we are going to apply surging effect for our waves also, like the one applied to our text layer. For that duplicate the waves group, right-click the waves group and select Duplicate Group and merge the group by Layer -> Merge Group (Ctrl + E) .

Apply the Ripple effect on this layer with the same setting applied before for the text. Go to Filter -> Distortion -> Ripple, apply the filter with the following settings such as Amount = 100%, Size = Large and apply OK.

This is the effect so far we have achieved.

Duplicate this rippled wave layer, apply some blur to give some glow effect for the waves, go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur apply the blur with the value Radius = 10 pixels and apply OK.

After applying the blur, the waves will look like this..

It is now time to give some glow to the text also, so duplicate our rippled text layer, the one we applied the Ripple distortion filter, move it to the top and then apply some Gaussian Blur with Radius = 10 and apply OK. Here we need to reduce the intensity of the base text color, for that we are colorizing this blurred layer to some light blue or Cyan color. Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation and select the check box named Colorize and move the sliders to get some light Cyan color and apply OK.

And our text will look like this now. You can see that the intensity of the gradient colors have been minimized.

Step 6: Creating the grid

Next we are going to give some retro touch to our effect by adding a perspective grid to the overall setting. For this, we are going to use some grid brushes from the pack 50 Deadly Tron Grids – Arcnerva Brushes from Brusheezy by Arcnerva.

Load these brushes into our document after downloading them and unzipping them in a separate folder, select the Brush tool (B) from the Tool Box, set the Foreground color to RGB Cyan, then in the brush tool options available below the menu bar, choose the drop-down and click the arrow pointing to the right to load the settings and choose Load Brushes from the menu, select the file with the extension .abr from the folder which we have unzipped previously.

Now the grid brushes are loaded into the document, from the collection choose the one which says grid 10 and create the new layer, and in the bottom part of the image, create a grid like one as shown below.

Next we need to resize this grid to approximately match the width of the text, go to Edit -> Transform -> Scale (Ctrl + T) and adjust the size as shown below.

Then erase or mask our the portions of the grid falling behind the text, by using a soft round brush of about 200 px size and 0% hardness.

Add some glow to the grid, by applying some Gaussian Blur to it, by duplicating the original grid layer and then apply blur filter.

Step 7: Creating the shadow

Next we are going to create a nice and subtle shadow of the text on the perspective grid. Duplicate the base_text layer, move it to the top, flip the layer vertically by choosing Edit -> Transform -> Flip Vertical and drag it down so that the bottom and top portions of the original and flipped text layers exactly meet at the edges.

Then we are going to adjust the perspective of the shadow to exactly match the perspective of the grid. For that we need to transform the text , choose Edit -> Transform -> Scale (Ctrl + T) and re-size the shadow text layer like shown below.

Tip: Creating/Changing perspectives in Transform mode

While in Transform mode i.e., when you select your layer to re-size, rotate or move by choosing Ctrl + T, you can also adjust the perspective of your layers by holding down the Ctrl (Cmd for Mac) key and dragging the four corner handles of your layer.

After adjusting the perspectives, our shadow will look like this.

Now our shadow looks flat and unfortunately that is not the case with the shadows, so we need to fine tune it, by layer masking it using a gradient on the layer mask layer. Add a layer mask to this layer, by right-clicking and choose Add Layer Mask. Now with the layer mask selected, choose the Gradient Tool (G), choose the default gradient Foreground to Background with black and white as the colors respectively, if the default colors are changed switch them back to the default by pressing the D key which will reset the default foreground and background colors.

Draw a Linear gradient from the bottom to the top in the layer mask as shown below.

Change the blending mode of this shadow layer to Color Dodge and the effect will look like this.

Step 8: Adding Surge points on the text

Now to create some sharp surge points on the text, create a new layer, choose a soft round brush with white as the color and 50 px diameter and 0% hardness, paint some spots on the text randomly.

Change the blending mode of the layer to Overlay.

Now create a new layer, and change the brush diameter to 100 – 150 px and then paint some soft white areas at the point where the text and the grid intersect.

Then change the blending mode of this layer to Overlaye and Layer Opacity = 50%.

Step 9: Finishing Touch

We are almost to the end of the tutorial, our effect is ready, for the final touch, we are just adding some some space scene to the overall effect. For that we are using a nebulae stock image, sorry i forgot where i downloaded this stock image if anyone knows the author and link please let us know we will update it as soon as possible, you can also use your own stock if you like.

Open the stock image, copy it and paste it into our document , a new layer for the stock image will be created , resize the image to fit into the canvas. Then de-saturate the image since we are going to make our scene look uniform with colors, and we are using some light cyan as our light for the effects we need to colorize our stock image. Go to Image -> Adjustments -> De-saturate (Ctrl + Shift + U) and then select Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/ Saturation, select the Colorize check box and choose some light cyan color and apply OK. Use the below image for your reference.

Also we need to erase or mask out some portions of the space stock below the text and the grid. For that add a layer mask and using soft round brush of 200px diameter and 0% hardness , mask out the bottom portions of the stock.

Now move the layer to the bottom of the stack just above the background layer and change the Layer Blending Mode to Screen and change the Layer Opacity to 50%.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with a colorful surging electric wave text effect in Photoshop. There are certain things we want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of filters, choice of fonts , layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

Download PSD

We’re finished! Hopefully you’ve picked up a few new techniques and had fun while doing so. Please share any of your personal creations in the comments for others to see!

In this quick tutorial, you will learn how to create an awesome microscopic particle text effect which has a realistic, natural-looking texture like a bacteria in Photoshop using plain layer styles and filters. We will play with some layer styles and filters to create our text in a very quick time, the steps are much easier to follow, this tutorial requires no user expertise, even a beginner can learn with ease and create some stunning text effects based on this.

Before going into the tutorial, let us see how the final image will look like.

Materials Needed:

Hand of Sean font from DaFont

Network Neurons 1 Stock image from sxc.hu by gerard79

Step 1:New Document

Create a new document of size 1600 by 1200 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of any simple, hand-written style font, i am using the font Hand of Sean which can be downloaded from DaFont, about the size of 350 pt of white color.

Step 3: :Layer Styles for the text

Apply these following layer styles to the first – (bottom layer) text layer.

Bevel and Emboss

First apply the Bevel and Emboss style for the text, with the Gloss Contour option selected as Ring Double, you can find this option by clicking the drop-down next to it, please use the below image for your reference.

After applying the Bevel and Emboss style, our text will look like this.

Satin

Next apply the Satin style with the second (top layer) text layer.

Here also, we need to apply a different Contour style other than the default one. Choose the Ring contour style from the drop-down and apply OK.

This is the effect so far with our text.

Step 4: Creating the texture – Reticulation filter

With the text layers ready, next we need to create our texture for the effect. For that we are going to use the Reticulation filter available in Photoshop. Before that we need to group the two text layers, duplicate the group, merge them and rasterize them and finally apply the filter.

So first select the two text layers, go to Layer -> Group Layers (Ctrl + G), then duplicate the group by Layer -> Duplicate Group, then merge them by using Layer -> Merge Group (Ctrl + E). Name this layer to something like reticulation_layer since we are going to apply the reticulation filter on this layer.

Then go to Filter -> Sketch -> Reticulation, use the settings as: Density = 12, Foreground Level = 40, Background Level = 5, use the below image for your reference.

Tip: Using Reticulation Filter

We need to make sure one thing before using the Reticulation filter, that is setting the appropriate Foreground and Background colors for the filter, since the Reticulation filter works with both the foreground and background colors, we need to set them before applying it. As you can see the two options of the filter are respectively named as Foreground Level and Background Level, these two options control how the colors are intensified in the effect. For our tutorial, we don’t need to change our foreground and background colors, since we are using only the default colors black and white, we just need to make sure they are set to default, if not press the D key to set them to the default colors.

After applying the filter our text will look like this…

Now duplicate this layer and apply Gaussian Blur, go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur with the settings as Radius = 20 pixels and apply OK.

Change the Layer Blending Mode to Linear Dodge(Add) and set the Layer Opacity to 75%. This is to add some glow to the effect because we used the default black and white colors for the filter, our effect will somewhat look dull if we are not adding any additional glow to it.

Step 5:Creating the Environment using Stock image

Our text effect is almost done, but its looking very plain at the moment, so we need to light it up a little, for that we are creating an environment which resembles that the text is seen through a microscope by looking at a tissue or blood sample. We are going to add a stock image for this, grab this stock image called network neurons 1 from SXC provided by gerard79, many thanks to him for providing us a wonderful stock image.

Open the stock image, copy it and paste it into our document , a new layer for the stock image will be created , resize the image to fit into the canvas and then set the Layer Blending Mode to Screen and change the Layer Opacity to 20%.

Step 6: Finishing Touch – Adding a Gradient Map

We are almost to the end of the tutorial, our effect is ready, for the final touch, we are just adding some color to the overall effect. For that create a new Adjustment Layer by Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Gradient Map and set some light green gradient for our effect. The gradient colors are running from #008C00 to #4BA614. You can the gradient colors by clicking on the selected gradient from the drop-down.

After applying the gradient map, change the layer mode of this Adjustment Layer to Overlay otherwise our underlying effect won’t be visible in the canvas.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with a microscopic particle text effect with realistic looking texture of organic tissue.

In this quick tutorial, you will learn how to create an awesome shining text effect which has realistic, natural-looking metal texture in Photoshop using plain layer styles, simple blurring techniques and filters.

Create a new document of size 1600 by 800 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of any sci-fi,high-tech or futuristic style font, i am using the font CGF Locust Resistance which can be downloaded from DaFont, about the size of 300 pt of white color. The color of the text does not matter here since we are going to apply gradient overlay on it.

Note: This text layer is the base for our design, so henceforth in the tutorial, we will be mentioning this layer as base_text.

Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Step 3: :Layer Styles for the text

Apply these following layer styles to text.

Gradient Overlay

First apply the Gradient Overlay style for the text, with the default gradient available in Photoshop named Silver which resembles metal like gradient or you can create your own gradient if you want, please use the below image for your reference.

Stroke

Next apply the Stroke style with White (#FFFFFF) as the color.

This is the effect so far with our text.

Step 4: Fragment the text

Next we are going to start applying the required filters for our effect. First of them is the Fragment filter which is a Pixelate categroy filter available in Photoshop. Before applying the filter we need to rasterize our text along with the layer effects. For that first duplicate the base_text layer, then create a new layer above it, select both the layers and merge them using Layer -> Merge Layers (Ctrl + E).

Now our layer is rasterized with the layer effects then we start applying filters on this layer. We can make multiple copies of this rasterized layer later to apply all the filters. Before that rename the layer with some identifiable name before applying a filter. For this layer we are naming it something like Fragments_filter.

Now go to Filter -> Pixelate -> Fragment. Repeat this step some 8-9 times for getting subtle fragments of our text.

Step 5:Motion Blur

Make one more copy of base_text layer, rasterize it like the previous step, rename it and then apply Motion blur in the horizontal direction using Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur with the values Angle = 0, Distance = 999 and apply OK.

Duplicate this layer and apply Gaussian Blur using Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur with the valueRadius = 2 pixels and apply OK.

Step 6: Texturizer

The next filter we are going to apply is the Texturizer Filter. Before that make a duplicate of the base_text layer, rasterize it, rename it some thing like Texturizer_filter. Then go to Filter -> Texture -> Texturizer, apply the filter using the below settings: Texture = Sandstone, Scaling = 100%, Relief = 4, Light = Top.

After applying the filter our text will look like this.

Step 7: Ink Outlines Filter

The metal texture is getting ready for the text, but it still lacks some depth and sharpness so we need to apply one more filter called the Ink Outlines above the Texturizer filter. Now duplicate the texturizer layer, and go to Filter -> Brush Strokes -> Ink Outlines, use the following settings for this filter: Stroke length = 4, Dark Intensity = 20, Light Intensity = 10 and apply OK.

After applying the Ink Outlines filter on the duplicated texturizer layer, the text will have a look like this.

Duplicate this layer, change the Layer Blending Mode to Multiply and the Layer Opacity to 70%, to give still more depth to the texture.

Duplicate this layer one more time and apply Gaussian Blur by Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur with 10 as the radius and apply OK. Now our text will have blurred overlay in the middle portions , this is just to give some additional glare and flare for the metal texture.

Now change the Layer Blending Mode of this layer to Linear Dodge(Add) and change the Layer Opacity to 20% so that the glare won’t be disturbing the overall shine of the text.

Step 8: Color Overlay

Now its time to add some vibrance to the metal texture by adding some color overlays upon the various parts of the text. Create a new layer and name it something like color_overlay. Grab the Brush tool (B) from the Tool Box, choose a soft round brush with Diameter = 200 px, Hardness = 0% and choose the following colors to paint some soft spots upon the text. Pale Warm Brown # C8A46D and Pure Cyan # 00A9EC.

Paint some soft dabs here and there over the text like shown below.

Now change the Layer Blending Mode to Overlay and change the Layer Opacity to 75%. This will give a nice and subtle vibrant and colorful effect on the metal texture.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with a snazzy text effect with realistic looking metal texture. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of filters, choice of fonts , layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

In this quick tutorial, you will learn how to create a colorful text effect in which the colors form a wavy pattern upon the text giving it a vibrant and cute look in Photoshop using simple masking techniques and filters.

Create a new document of size 1280 by 1024 px with white as the background color. You can later apply some subtle gradient in the background layer if you want to highlight the text colors. In our tutorial, for the final output we have used a Radial Gradient for the background running from the colors #d6dbbf to #feffe8.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of any round, bulbous, or fluffy font, i am using the font VAL which can be downloaded from FontFabric, about the size of 350 pt of black color. The color of the text does not matter here since we are going to apply some clipping mask of multiple colors on it.

Note: This text layer is the base for our design, so henceforth in the tutorial, we will be mentioning this layer as base_text.

Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Step 3: Drawing Color Bars

Now to create the curvy colors inside our text, we are going to draw some multiple color bars over the text and then later merge them and distort them to get a perfect wavy effect and clip it along the edges of the text.

First grab the Rectangle Tool (U), then draw a rectangle bar approximately about 1/4 th the size of the text from the bottom using the color RGB Red (#FF0000).

Then duplicate this layer 3 times and change the color of each bar to RGB Yellow(#FFFF00) , RGB Blue (#0000FF) and RGB Green (#00FF00) respectively. The choice of the colors and number of colors used depends entirely upon your taste, you can use different color palettes if you wish.

Now the text is entirely hidden behind our color bars.

Step 4: Wave Distort the color bars

Now its time to go for the wavy effect for the colors , for that we are going to use the Wave Distortion filter available in Photoshop’s default distortion filters. Before that, we need to merge all our color bar layers together, select all the 4 color bar layers , since we drew them using the Rectangle Tool , there will be four different layers for each colors. Select them all, and merge them using Layer -> Merge Layers (Ctrl + E).

Then go to Filter ->Distort -> Wave. Apply the wave filters using the following settings.

This is how our image looks like after applying the Wave distort filter.

As you can see, there are some parts left behind the color bars around the edges displaying the black portions of the text, we need to cover up these parts, for that, you can re-size our color bars to a larger size on all the sides as required.

Step 5: Apply Clipping Mask

Now we are going to mask the text with this distorted color bars so that the color bars are only visible upon the text, for that hold down the Alt-key and move over the edge in between the text and color bars layers, you will see a Clipping mask icon ( with two circles overlapping each other with an arrow pointing towards the left) and when you see this icon, click exactly on the edge and you color bars layer gets clipped with text layer and finally release the Alt-key.

This is how the text will look like after applying the Clipping mask.

Step 6: Adding Depth and Shadows

Now group both the layers, the distorted color bars and the text and duplicate the group by Layer -> Duplicate Group, then merge the group using Layer -> Merge Group (Ctrl + E).

Then apply a Gaussian Blur of about radius 10 pixels on this layer using Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur and set Radius = 10 and apply OK.

Apply the following layer style for this layer.

Drop Shadow

Now duplicate this Layer, remove all the Layer Styles.

Quick Tip: Removing / Turning Off the Layer styles

In order to permanently remove the layer style for a particular layer, click and drag the fx layer style icon next to the Layer name and drop it down on the Trash Can icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel, or you can simply right-click on the particular layer and choose Clear Layer Style. To temporarily turn off the layer style, you can toggle the visibility of the Effects Layer below the layer marked by an eye icon.

Then go to Filter -> Sketch -> Halftone Pattern, apply this filter with the following settings Size = 1, Contrast = 50 and Pattern Type = Dot and apply OK.

Change this Layer opacity to 20%.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with a cute colorful style text effect. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of color palettes, no of colors, choice of fonts , layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a glowing and blue-print style typography effect in Photoshop using very simple and effective techniques.

Create a new document of size 1000 by 1000 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of any bold and crisp font, i am using the font Nevis which can be downloaded from UrbanFonts, about the size of 200px of white color. The color of the text does not matter here since we are going to apply some layer styles on it.

Note: This text layer is the base for our design, so henceforth in the tutorial, we will be mentioning this layer as base_text.

Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Step 3: Layer Styles for the text

Now add the following layer styles to the text layer.

Gradient Overlay

The Gradient colors run from # 596a72 to # cfdde8.

Stroke

This is the effect so far, after applying the above Layer styles…

Step 4: Duplicate and apply Gaussian Blur

Before applying the Motion Blur we are going to rasterize our text layer along with the layer effects, in order to do that, first duplicate our text layer and create a new layer above it, select both the new layers and the duplicated text layer, merge them using Layers -> Merge Layers or simply press Ctrl + E (Cmd + E for Mac users). Don’t forget to rename the merged layer as the original “gaussian_blur”. Now our text is ready to be blurred.

Go to Filter -> Blur-> Gaussian Blur, give 20 to Radius and apply OK.

Now this is the effect so far with the text.

Step 5: Vertical Streaks

Now with our basic text is ready, its now time to create the strokes on the vertical direction to simulate the blue-print kind of style over the text. For that, create a new layer name it something like vertical_strokes, just grab the Pencil tool (B) from the toolbox, and select White (#FFFFFF) as the color, set the brush width to 1 px solid. Now draw some straight lines along the vertical edges of the text with the Pencil tool, hold down the SHIFT key to get perfect straight lines and draw the lines with their length just extending some 4-5 pixels from the top and bottom edges.

Now go to Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur and apply vertical motion blur with the settings as: Angle = 90, Distance = 20

You can see now some beautiful strokes sharply extending along the edges of the text, Now duplicate this layer again to add some strength to the strokes.
This is the effect so far.

Step 6: Horizontal Streaks

Now using the previous step, we are going to create the horizontal strokes but the only difference is that , we are going to draw the strokes in the horizontal direction and apply Motion blur with the horizontal mode using the settings like Angle = 0, Distance = 20. Create a new layer for this step and name it as horizontal_strokes.

After drawing both the horizontal and vertical strokes our text will look like this.

Step 7: Diagonal Strokes (without Blur)

Using the above steps, we are going to draw the diagonal strokes around the text and just omitting the Motion blur part, since we don’t exactly know what will be the angles used for blurring the strokes to get sharpness at its edges. This is just a tricky part in this tutorial, so i am going to leave it as such.

Step 8: Hand-drawn curves

As you notice, we may encounter some curvy letters in our text like “C” in ours, for that part, we need to simply follow the curve and draw the strokes by hand using the Pencil Tool with the same settings used in the previous steps. Also please omit the Motion blur part for this step also.

Step 9: Adding extra Glow

In order to add some additional glow to the text, we are going to paint some soft white spots randomly around the text and change the layer blending mode to adjust the extra flare. Just create a new layer and grab the Brush tool (B), with a soft round brush of 200px diameter, 0% hardness just paint some spots here and there over the text. Use the image for your reference.

Change the blending mode of this layer to Overlay and thus we get the required glowing effect at last.

Step 10: Adjust the glows randomly using Clouds

If you feel that the glow is uniform or boring, you can adjust it by adding a new layer, go to Filter -> Render -> Clouds .

Change the blending mode of the clouds layer to Overlay.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with a glowing blue-print style text effect. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a sparkling and blazing Gothic text that seems to appear like Medieval age style golden typography effect in Photoshop using very simple and effective techniques.

Create a new document of size 1600 by 1200 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

The choice of font is the most important ingredient in our recipe, we need a Gothic style or Medieval style font which perfectly establishes our basic requirement for the tutorial. Now add some text of any Gothic style or Middle Age style font, i am using the font BlackLetter which can be downloaded from DaFont, about the size of 300px of color #fa8132, this color suits well for our glittering and sparkling metal or you can choose any other subtle or dark orange color for the text.

These layer styles make up the basic type effect for our design with a solid outer bevel.

Bevel and Emboss

Satin

This is the effect so far, after applying the above Layer styles…

Step 4: Duplicate and apply Motion Blur

Before applying the Motion Blur we are going to rasterize our text layer along with the layer effects, in order to do that, first duplicate our text layer and create a new layer above it, select both the new layers and the duplicated text layer, merge them using Layers -> Merge Layers or simply press Ctrl + E (Cmd + E for Mac users). Don’t forget to rename the merged layer as the original “motion_blur”. Now our text is ready to be blurred.

To achieve the perfect motion blur effect on our text, we will be applying the Motion Blur at three levels:

First Level or Base Level, Vertical Blur with Angle = 90 and Distance = 500

Second Level or Middle Level, Vertical Blur with Angle = 90 and Distance = 100

Third Level or Top Level, Horizontal Blur with Angle = 0 and Distance = 999 ( this is further followed with the Wave Distortion Filter)

Go to Filter -> Blur-> Motion Blur, give 90 to Angle , 500 to Distance and apply OK.

Now this is the effect so far with the text.

Duplicate the base_text layer again and rasterize it, move it to the top of the Layers Panel, then apply Motion Blur with the following settings: Angle = 90, Distance = 100

Duplicate the base_text layer one more time and rasterize, move it to the top, then apply Motion Blur with the following settings: Angle = 0, Distance = 999

Then go to Filter -> Distort -> Wave, apply this Wave filter on the same layer with the settings shown as below. This effect is just to create a smoke like glare and glow , distorted like a wave around the text which will in turn give a subtle blazing effect on the text.

Now the text looks like this.

Step 5: Gaussian Blur

We need one more blur for our type, we just need a subtle glow on the text at this stage, so we will be utilizing our simple Gaussian Blur for the same. Now Duplicate the base_text layer and rasterize, move it to the top, apply Gaussian Blur by choosing Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur with the Radius as 10.

Now the text will look like this, the design looks somewhat too blurry at the moment, don’t worry we will be finally merging the layers and adjust the layer blending modes later to get the perfect look.

Step 6: Creating jagged edges along the outer part of the text

It’s now time to add some polishing touch to our text and its edges, since they don’t seem to be natural and worn out, instead they are looking uniform and boring, so to spice it up a little bit, we are going to randomly adjust the outer bevel portion by giving them a ripple effect.

Duplicate the base_text layer and rasterize, move it to the top, rename it some thing like ripple_effect since we will be duplicating this layer two more times later in the tutorial, so it is a good practice to name the layers appropriately. Go to Filter -> Distort -> Ripple, give 100% to the Amount and choose Medium as the Size and apply OK.

Change the blending mode of this layer to Darken

Duplicate this ripple_effect layer, and change the blending mode to Linear Dodge(Add).

Step 7: Adding Glitter

The text is getting to look better at this stage, but still it is not great since it lacks the glitter and shine which it should have at the first place. So in order to make it glitter and shine, we will be using our Reticulation filter to and overlay it to achieve the final effect.

Now Duplicate the ripple_effect layer, go to Filter -> Sketch -> Reticulation, use the following settings:
Density = 12, Foreground Level = 40, Background Level = 5 and apply OK.

Now this is the effect after applying the Reticulation filter on the duplicated ripple_effect.

Change the blending mode of this layer to Color Dodge.

Now the outer portion or the borders of the text looks stunning, but inside and the middle portions look somewhat gloomy and dark, we need to put some light over it, for that grab the Brush (B) tool, select a soft round brush with white as the color, and size = 50px and 0% hardness. Now paint lightly over the inner an middle portions of the text where we need some light, use the below image for your reference.

After painting the white light, change the blending mode of the layer to Overlay, now our text is highlighted a little and we got the required sparkle on it.

Step 8: Finishing touch

Our design is almost ready, still if you feel the effect needs a little more strength, Select all the layers and group them using Layer -> Group Layers ( Ctrl + G) . Then duplicate the group by right-clicking on the group and select Duplicate Group, select the group and merge it using Layer -> Merge Group (Ctrl + E) .

Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light and thus we get the stunning sparkling Gothic text effect at last.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with sensational sparkling Gothic look text effect. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a text effect that looks like text made from shiny and scraped metal in Photoshop using very simple and effective techniques. We will play with some layer styles and filters to create our text in a very quick time, the steps are much easier to follow, this tutorial requires no user expertise, even a first timer in Photoshop can create awesome text effects based on this.

Before going into the tutorial, let us see how the final image will look like.

Step 1:New Document

Create a new document of size 1280 by 1024 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of any free style or handwritten style font, i am using the font Hand of Sean which can be downloaded from DaFont, about the size of 220px of color #f5b857. Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Step 3: Layer Styles for the text

Now add the following layer styles to the text layer.

Drop Shadow

Bevel and Emboss

This is the effect so far, after applying the above Layer styles…

Step 4: Duplicate and apply Ripple Distort Filter

Before applying the Ripple Distortion effect we are going to rasterize our text layer along with the layer effects, in order to do that, first duplicate our text layer and name it something like “ripple_effect”, create a new layer above the “ripple_effect” layer, select both the new layers and the duplicated text layer, merge them using Layers -> Merge Layers or simply press Ctrl + E (Cmd + E for Mac users). Don’t forget to rename the merged layer as the original “ripple_effect”. Now our text is ready to be distorted.

Go to Filter -> Distort -> Ripple, give 100% to Amount , Medium to Size and apply OK.

Change the blending mode of this layer to Linear Burn

Now this is the effect so far with the text.

Duplicate this ripple_effect layer and change the blending mode to Darken.

Step 5: Group and Merge Layers

Now we have three layers:

Original Text layer with Layer Styles

Rasterized Ripple Layer – Linear Burn mode

Rasterized Ripple Layer – Darken mode

Select all the above 3 layers and group them using Layer -> Group Layers ( Ctrl + G) . Then select the Group and merge it using Layer -> Merge Group (Ctrl + E) .

Step 6: Ocean Ripple Distortion Effect

Apply the Ocean Ripple effect using Filter -> Distort -> Ocean Ripple, with the values Ripple Size = 10 and Ripple Magnitude = 12.

And this will be the effect after applying the Ocean Ripple effect..

Duplicate this layer one more time for a stronger effect since only one layer will somewhat have a mild appearance on the text.

Step 7: Gaussian Blur for shining metal effect

Duplicate the previous layer one more time and apply a Gaussian blur with Radius = 10

Now change the blending mode of this layer to Linear Dodge(Add)

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order given below for good looking final result.

Finally here is our final image with awesome looking scrap metal text effect. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of layer styles, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.

Download PSD

We’re finished! Hopefully you’ve picked up a few new techniques and had fun while doing so. Please share any of your personal creations in the comments for others to see!

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a colorful and futuristic style text effect in Photoshop using simple glow effects, motion blurring and stylish fonts and abstract stock images with some simple techniques. We will make use of some layer styles and lots of filters to create our text and finally some stock images as textures to polish our design, the steps are much easier to follow, this tutorial requires no user expertise, even a first timer in Photoshop can create superb typography designs based on this.

Before going into the tutorial, let us see how the final image will look like.

Materials Needed:

Viper Squadron font from DaFont

Abstract Stock Image from sxc.hu by marchecco

Step 1:New Document

Create a new document of size 1600 by 1200 px with black as the background color.

Step 2: Add Text

Now add some text of the font Viper Squadron which can be downloaded from DaFont, about the size of 300px of any color (since we are going to set the Fill to 0 anyway, the color of the text does not matter). Make sure to rename this layer as “base_text” because we will be duplicating this particular layer many times, later in the tutorial for applying filters and textures to achieve the final effect.

Position the text in the center of the document , aligning both the horizontal and vertical centers with respect to the background layer.

Before applying the following layer style for the text layer, set the Fill to 0% for the layer.

Step 3: Layer Styles for the text

Now add the following layer styles to the text layer.

Inner Glow

Add an Inner Glow layer style with White #FFFFF as the color with the following settings.

Step 4: Motion Blur

Now we are going to add Motion Blur the text by duplicating the original layer and then rasterizing the same.

Rasterizing the layer with Layer styles

Before applying the Motion blur effect we are going to rasterize our text layer along with the layer effects, in order to do that, first duplicate our text layer called base_text, move it to the top of the Layers Panel and rename it something like “motion_blur”, create a new layer above the motion_blur layer, select both the new layer and the duplicated text layer, merge them using Layers -> Merge Layers or simply press Ctrl + E (Cmd + E for Mac users). Don’t forget to rename the merged layer as the original motion_blur. Now our text is ready to be distorted.

Go to Filter -> Blur-> Motion Blur, give 200 to Distance and 0 as the Angle and apply OK.

After applying Motion Blur , the text will look like this.

Step 5: Add Gaussian Blur

Now we are going to add a little Gaussain blur to our text to give some glow, for that duplicate the “base_text” layer , move it to the top of the Layers Panel and rename it as gaussian_blur. Rasterize this layer using the technique mentioned in Step 4

Apply a Guassian Blur of about 20px.

After adding Gaussian Blur the text will look something like this.

Step 6: Halftone Effect

Once again duplicate the base_text layer, move it to the top, rename this layer, rasterize it and then apply the Halftone effect on this layer.

Go to Filter -> Sketch -> Halftone Pattern , apply this filter using the settings: Size = 1, Contrast = 50, Pattern Type = Dot.

Now this is the effect so far with the text.

Step 7: Apply Fragment Filter

Prepare the text for applying the Fragment filter, duplicate the base_text layer, move it to the top, rename this layer, rasterize it and then apply the Fragment effect on this layer.

Go to Filter -> Pixelate -> Fragment. Repeat this effect again about 2-3 times to get the text fragmented which will give a nice distorted effect on the text.

Step 8: Adding Color Overlay

Now our text is great but it lacks some vibrance, so now it’s time to add some colors to it. Create a new layer at the top, name it color_overlay.

Grab the Brush Tool (B), select a soft round brush of 0% hardness and 200px diameter.

Pick the colors Cyan (#00FFFF) and Magenta (#FF00FF) and brush some soft spots randomly over the text here and there, you can use the below image for reference.

Change the blending mode of the layer to Overlay.

This is the effect with so far.

Step 9: Adding Abstract Stock Texture

Our design is almost ready for the final step, now grab the stock image from Abstract Stock Image from sxc.hu by marchecco. Thanks to Marchecco for providing such quality and wonderful stock for us.

Resize the image to fit into our canvas and change the blending mode of the layer to Multiply.

This is how our final output will look like, please also take a look at how the layers are stacked against each other and arrange the same in the order for good looking final result.

Some Enhancements

Our design is ready now, if you want to enhance the quality of the image and effects, you can sharpen the final output a little using standard Sharpen filters available in Photoshop. We have used the Reduce Noise and Smart Sharpen filters to get the final image for the tutorial.

Flatten the image by Layer -> Flatten Image (you can also duplicate the document if you want to retain the original for later refinements by Image -> Duplicate and then flatten it to apply enhancement filters.)

Reduce Noise

Smart Sharpen

Finally here is our final image with vibrant and awesome looking Futuristic text effect. There are certain things i want to mention here, please be liberal with the use of stock images, different sizes, different textures, having a wide variety of stocks used will improve the quality of the output, and also experiment with the settings while applying filters to get accurate and effective results.
